Ramp’s latest AI Index has produced a neat headline: Anthropic has passed OpenAI in business adoption for the first time in Ramp’s dataset. The details are more useful than the headline. According to Ramp lead economist Ara Kharazian, Anthropic adoption rose 3.8 per cent in April to 34.4 per cent of businesses, while OpenAI adoption fell 2.9 per cent to 32.3 per cent. Overall AI adoption rose to 50.6 per cent.

The reversal is striking because OpenAI has been the default reference point for business AI since ChatGPT pushed the category into the mainstream. Ramp says Anthropic has quadrupled business adoption over the last year, while OpenAI grew business adoption by only 0.3 per cent. That does not make Anthropic the permanent enterprise winner. It does tell us something important about the market: model choice is still fluid.

For AEC leaders, this is a warning about procurement, governance and operating architecture. If businesses can shift model providers this quickly, construction firms should design AI estates for optionality, cost visibility and controlled switching from the beginning.
